SIM Science and Engineering Fair Medal Recipients
Five Inyo County students received medals at the regional Science and Engineering Fair held April 3rd in Fontana. 8th graders Rylee Arcularius and Evelina Dondero of Round Valley Elementary School were awarded a Silver medal and were recognized as having an Outstanding Environmental Science Fair Project from the Mojave Desert Air and Waste Management District for their project, Flood Irrigation Efficiency. 8th grader Owen Hildenbrand of Home Street Middle School also received a Silver medal as well as a Broadcom Masters award for his project, Alfalfa, is it as Tough as We All Think? Two students garnered Bronze medals: 7th grader Amelia Blakey of Home Street Middle School for her project, Catchy Colors, and 4th grader Bennett Rowan of Bishop Elementary School for his project, Effect of Parachute Size on
Hundreds of students and projects from schools and districts in San Fernardino, Inyo, and Mono counties were on display. Individual and group projects were presented in 23 categories of science – from microbiology to zoology, math and physics to electronics. Each project was judged by a team of representatives from education, industry and science communities, as well as
other members of the public. Criteria include research knowledge, use of the scientific method, knowledge of the subject, writing strategies and the creation of original data. The Inyo County Superintendent of Schools commends the medal recipients for the time and effort they put into their projects.
