Big Pine Paiute Permaculture Action Day On the Road to Burning Man
When: Saturday, August 26th (7am - 7pm)
Where: 825 South Main Street, Big Pine, CA 93513 (garden just to North)
Who: Big Pine Paiute Tribe; Indigenous Farming Project; Permaculture Action Network; Burners Without Borders
The day before the gates open to the annual Burning Man event this year, the Big Pine Paiute Tribe is inviting the gathering’s participants to come take action with them at the tribal community garden in the Owens Valley of California. The “Permaculture Action Day” will focus on building a large greenhouse for winter growing, along with other garden projects. That garden was started by the Big Pine Paiute Environmental Department with the assistance of the Indigenous Farming Project. People traveling to Burning Man are invited to stop along US Route 395, the road most San Diego and Los Angeles residents take up to Black Rock City, to take part in building rainwater catchment “earthworks,” attend seed-saving workshops and other classes, as well as enjoy a day of music and food.
Burners Without Borders, a program of Burning Man Project, is hosting the event, the second since the first “Permaculture Action Day on the Road to Burning Man” was held in Los Angeles in August of 2016. The Los Angeles action day attracted over 200 people to build compost systems, plant pollinator gardens, plant fruit trees, and learn about the power of building soil to sequester carbon from the atmosphere at a demonstration garden in Venice called “Kiss the Ground.”
The publicly-accessible demonstration garden features “permaculture swales,” perennial & annual plant cultivation, and plants native to the Eastern Sierras. The event is completely free to attend and the public is welcome to arrive starting at 5:30pm on the evening of Friday, August 25th, when the tribe’s weekly farmers’ market opens to beat the summer heat. For those who want to wake up early on August 26th and begin working before the heat of the day, onsite camping is available at the tribal headquarters that evening. Many will then continue their journey Saturday evening to the Burning Man event near Gerlach, Nevada.
The event is being co-hosted by the Permaculture Action Network, an organization that has mobilized over 10,000 people over the last three years to these kinds of action days after concerts and before music festivals. Visit the organization's website for more information on the day.
