Focus On Art, History, and Sustainability

OAKLAND — In this Caltrans News Flash, we show you how steel from the old Bay Bridge east
span is being transformed into works of art.
Through the Bay Bridge Steel Program, more than 450 tons of recycled steel has been awarded
to artists for restoration and transformation into new visual art pieces that will be viewed by the
public throughout California. The program supports the department’s goal of sustainability and
shares the history of the old east span.
