The Freedom of The Press 2017 exhibit will be on view from Saturday, March 25th until Friday, April 21st, 2017. This exhibition is dedicated to the memory of one of our former students, Betty Cameron, a local artist loved by many who passed away recently in a tragic auto accident.
Karen and Bruce Licher and Lori Michelon will be demonstrating the latest addition to Independent Project Press during the opening reception: a magnificent antique Reliance monotype printing press. The Lichers are thrilled and grateful for the generosity of Pete Korngiebel at Community Printing, who gifted them this press which has has been a showpiece in his establishment for many years. Over a century after this press was constructed circa 1910, it now will be put to use creating large scale monotype art prints by local and visiting artists. Monotype prints are very special one of a kind prints. Each print is unique due to variations in inking or other physical actions taken by the artist on the printing form. During the opening reception you will have a chance to see this press in action!
For those who find this exhibit fun and enticing, Independent Project Press is offering a new class in hand-fed Letterpress Printing which will begin on Tuesday, April 11th. This class will run for 4 consecutive Tuesday evenings. Participants will learn the hands-on process of letterpress printing (including typesetting using cast metal type), and will design and create a finished printed work of their own. It’s great fun to work on vintage hand-fed Chandler & Price platen presses, as our past students will attest!
Concurrently, Independent Project Press is again offering its popular class in relief printing with Eastside artist Lori Michelon. Participants will explore creating images with linoleum blocks, rubber, and other easily-carvable material. This class will begin on Thursday, April 13th, and will run for 4 consecutive Thursday evenings. Everyone will leave with a portfolio of prints created by the entire group along with their own two color print edition.
Both classes begin at 5:30 PM and run until 8 PM. If you’ve been thinking of learning all about letterpress or linoleum block printing, now is your chance to sign up for one or both of these two new classes. Please contact Bruce Licher at Independent Project Press for more information or to reserve your space.
Visitors are encouraged to explore our working letterpress print shop and art gallery. Current work on display includes: earthen mixed media paintings by Karen Nielsen Licher; black and white desert photography & letterpress-printed record album jackets by Bruce Licher; original photography and small photo books by Joe Profita; fine oil paintings and signed pigment prints by Alan Sonneman and Ray T. Dutcher; block print editions by Lori Michelon and encaustic artwork and limited edition prints by Rodney Thompson. Come shop for letterpress-printed greeting cards, music releases on vinyl and CD, art prints & other letterpress-printed ephemera. A special selection of art prints created by the artists in The Project Room exhibit will be available for sale.
The Project Room will be open for viewing on Saturdays from 11:00 AM - 3:00 PM and by appointment: call 760.873.3600, or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
